Concrete is one of the most flexible building materials ever created. It plays such a fundamental role in modern life. So much so that it seems impossible to imagine living without it. Our dependency on ‘liquid stone’ can be traced as far back as 2000 years ago when the Romans used it to build the Pantheon.
Yet despite this, we have a tendency to think of concrete as ugly. And while we are happy to expose bricks and wooden floorboards in our homes, we hide this ‘basic’ building material away.
Here at
The Cast Iron Bath Company, we think that, when done well, concrete has an inherent beauty and should be celebrated.
Perhaps the most appealing thing about concrete is how customisable it is. Virtually anything is possible. The amount of creativity it affords you is unprecedented. As well as being able to be shaped into almost limitless forms, from integral sinks to curved walls, and windowsills to sunken shelving, it can be coloured in a multitude of ways: from simply painting it to terrazzo (grinding the concrete to reveal the colour of the aggregate).
However, for us concrete is at its most striking when it has been polished. On a floor, polished concrete is robust, beautiful, and warmer underfoot than stone tiles. And there is an elegance you get from a polished concrete floor that you will never achieve from any other material. And when it is combined with a cast iron bath, the effect is stunning.
Environmentally, there are some concerns about concrete. The good news is there are eco-friendly options available. Some manufacturers make eco-concrete using recycled aggregate, which are much kinder to the environment. For instance, Designfinger is a company that uses up to 90% recycled materials in its concrete products.
